Lóratadín, virka efnið í Lóritín, hindrar áhrif histamíns í líkamanum, en histamín er það efni sem veldur helstu einkennum ofnæmis. Með því að koma í veg fyrir virkni histamíns er dregið úr einkennum ofnæmis eða komið í veg fyrir þau. Lóratadín vinnur á ofnæmi, ofnæmisbólgum í nefi og einnig útbrotum og kláða af völdum histamíns.
