They tell you, "Speak your mind" But under their breath, "Fall in line" "Dress to impress, blend with the crowd" "Stand out, but don't be too loud" They said, "just be yourself" "No, not like that" "We wear these kinds of shoes" "we ridicule those kinds of hats" They murmur, "Chase your dreams" But then they scoff, "Get real, it seems" "Fit the mold or you'll be out" "Dare to dream, but live with doubt" They whisper, "find your way" "No, not that path" I hear 'em say, “Show your spirit, be unique” Yet, they frown “Don’t stray or be a freak” “Follow the trends, keep it chic” “Be bright, but never truly critique” In a world full of “do’s and don'ts” that clash Where being yourself is a social flash “Go make your mark,” they cheer, then they smirk “Not too bold, stay shallow, that’s your work” “We love your voice, now sing this tune” “But drift off course and you’ll be marooned” They chant, “Take to the stars, aim so high” Then mutter low, “But be afraid to fly”
