[Verse 1] It's been said the worst vice is ad-vice I guess that's often true But it's one vice that I wish I'd gotten more of in my youth [Verse 2] Many lessons that I learned Were learned at great cost Let's hope these words will spare you The unnecessary loss (listen now, here we go) [Verse 3] Debt is a trap, you see Neither a lender nor a borrower be It's the rich man's favorite trap To catch folks like you and me [Verse 4] If you can't afford something you want You best find another way Learn to get along without it tomorrow Same as you done yesterday [Verse 5] Positions of authority may be held By folks doin' the best they can But the power itself corrupts them It goes the same way in every land [Verse 6] You can trust people (to a point) But not the offices they hold Be they in business or government Their allegiance is to master or gold [Verse 7] Be ever forthright and honest In your dealings with friend or foe Wield deception as you would a weapon Used only as a last resort [Verse 8] Reason shields your mind from enemies Your emotions are their lever to fool you Your feelings may do you credit But don't let them rule you [Verse 9] Don't invite needless complication To take residence in your home Simplicity will serve you better Complications come on their own [Verse 10] Guard your time for what brings you joy Or for things that you need but lack Those minutes spent on anything else You will never get them back [Verse 11] In even the worst of times We can find a path If we hold to our principles And help those who fall down when we can [end]
