*Ozonolysis: Cleavage of Bonds by Ozone* When oxygen is passed through 2-butene in the presence of zinc, two aldehydes are formed. When ozone gas is passed through isobutene in the presence of zinc, acetone and formaldehyde are formed. When hydrogen peroxide is passed with ozone, CO₂ gas is formed along with acetone. Through ozonolysis, we can determine the position of the pi bond. Terminal alkenes on ozonolysis produce either formaldehyde or CO₂. A specific example to remember is the ozonolysis of ortho-xylene, which produces three products in a ratio of 3:2:1.
